Rural Initiatives STEM Scholarship
For several decades, Bakersfield College’s Delano Campus has provided access to higher education for the historically underserved community of Delano. In recent years, the staff and faculty of the Delano Campus have expanded their service area to many new locations. With courses being offered beyond the Delano Campus at local area high schools and adult schools in Delano, McFarland, Wasco, Shafter, and Arvin, Bakersfield College has been able to create equitable access to higher education for residents of some of the most disadvantaged communities in Kern County. Communities like Arvin, McFarland, Wasco and Delano that have some of the highest unemployment and poverty rates in the state (around 30%), now have access to quality training and education programs.
The Delano College Center Foundation (DCCF) has historically provided scholarships to students who take classes at the Bakersfield College Delano Campus. However, this year, with the generous contribution from Southern California Edison, this scholarship opportunity will be available to all students who reside in rural Kern County, and will be attending Bakersfield College full-time.
The Rural Initiatives STEM Scholarship is sponsored by Edison International (Southern California Edison). Qualifications include: area of study in STEM pathway; residing in Delano, McFarland, Shafter, Wasco, or Arvin; a minimum GPA of 2.50; high school graduate (or equivalent); planning to enroll full-time (12+ units) at Bakersfield College for the upcoming academic year.
